side by side

A group show bringing together the artistic voices of Amoako Boafo and his contemporaries: Eric Adjei Tawiah, David Aplerh-Doku Borlabi, Millicent Ako-Nai Dede, Crystal Yayra Anthony, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Kwesi Botchway, Cornelius Annor, Stephen Allotey, and Ebenezer Nana Bruce

Amoako presents nine new original works with these chosen peers for the show, created through an intimate interplay and exchange of signature strokes for tactile textiles, that have been laced with stories of old, evoking joy and nostalgia.  Like balanced and harmonious melodies, the duets include a life-size bust and eight mixed media portraits, using various materials from coconut sheaths to secondhand leather bags.

Each portrait explores the interior world of a female who stands firmly in her power. Her gaze, unique and equally nuanced, dominates as it delves deep into the soul of their spectator, sumptuously serenading them with a loud and proud song of love and joy. They demand our attention, and as we stare back, examining them,  the grit that has given the power to the woman's voice is revealed.
